Proprietary hypertext document format used for help documentation in Microsoft Windows. Created by compiling marked-up text in RTF files; viewed with a program included with Windows 3.0 and later. Although not as flexible or standardized as HTML, WinHelp is much more consistent from computer to computer.

WinHelp is usually authored with a package such as RoboHelp or Doc2Help that sits on top of a word processor such as Microsoft Word. WinHelp was largely obsoleted with the introduction of HTML Help in Windows 98. HTML Help is yet another Microsoft plan to tie people into using Internet Explorer, and offers few innovative or desireable features, except that it ships with Windows 98 and will be the next new standard.
