A legal term indicating the subset of human beings subject to fair treatment.

On October 18, 1929, the British Privy Council, overturning a ruling by the Supreme Court of Canada, declared that women are persons in Canadian law. See the Persons Case.

Currently, Canadian law still excludes human fetuses from that same definition. Ironically, this is mainly due to the efforts of the women's rights movement.
