If you're in Hollywood, California and walking down a certain part of Hollywood Boulevard or Vine Street, you may not see any celebrities, but you will definitely see a lot of stars. This area of the city from La Brea Avenue to Gower Street and Sunset Boulevard to Yucca Street is home to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. First envisioned in 1958, and receiving Historic Landmark status in 1978, there are currently over 2100 stars in the sidewalks on both sides of these streets, each of them honoring the achievements of someone in show business.
Each celebrity can have up to one star in each of five categories1:
- Live Theater - symbolized by the comedy and tragedy theatrical masks, this category includes all live stage performers from standup comedians to Broadway stars
- Motion Picture - symbolized by a movie camera, this category includes directors, producers, and actors
- Radio - symbolized by a microphone, this group includes DJs, radio actors, and other famous radio personalities
- Recording - symbolized by a phonograph, this category includes singers, songwriters, composers, and other recording artists
- Television - symbolized by a television set, this group includes TV actors and others in this industry
Run by the local Chamber of Commerce, the stars also bring in a sizable income for the city. In addition to being a tourist attraction, it also costs the celebrity (or somebody) $15000 per star. Before this, the person must be nominated and get approved by a nomination committee, though anyone can nominate anyone to receive a star. Once approved, the star is created out of bronze, embedded in pink terrazzo, then surrounded by charcoal terrazzo. The name of the person being honored is engraved into the star, and the symbol representing the category is added. The star is later unveiled at a ceremony (included in the $15000) and becomes a permanent fixture of the local sidewalk. An average of 20 new stars are added each year.
It is interesting to note that you don't have to be a person or even a real entity to receive a star. Examples of this include two dogs (Lassie and Rin Tin Tin) and a cartoon character (Snow White). Sometimes the character itself receives the star rather than the actor who plays the character (Pee Wee Herman and Big Bird both have stars).
