The Obligation is part of the Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer, written by Rudyard Kipling in 1923, in response to a request from a group of Canadian engineers. The Obligation is not an oath, but a solemn expression of intention to adhere to the highest ideals of the engineering profession. The ring, which the engineer must wear on the little finger of the right hand (unless left handed), is a reminder to yourself and a sign to others that you have taken this Obligation.
