A town in West Virginia at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers. Site of John Brown's abortive rebellion and American Civil War battles. Now a U.S. national park.

Most famously, Stonewall Jackson captured the town in 1862 and the South gained important weapons works. Confederate general Robert E. Lee's attack bogged down here in 1862 after Union General George B. McClellan found a copy of Lee's battle orders and outflanked him.
