CRISPUS
(kris puhs) GREEK: KRISPOS
"curly"
_______________

One of Paul's converts, Crispus was a Jew of Corinth in Greece and head of that city's synagogue - a natural place from which to spread the gospel. Although many of the Jews "opposed and reviled" Paul, Crispus "together with all his household" (Acts 18:6, 8) came to believe in Jesus. The church at Corinth subsequently became racked with dissension, leading Paul to write to the Christians there: "Is Christ divided? . . . I am thankful that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name" (1 Corinthians 1:13, 14-15). Paul made it clear that he wanted followers not for himself but for Jesus.
