Aspects of Love is a musical by Sir
Andrew Lloyd Webber, more popularly known as the composer of famous musicals such as
The Phantom of the Opera,
Jesus Christ Superstar and
Evita.
Aspects is probably the least known of his works. It is based on the short novel of the same name by David Garnett. The story revolves around a small group of characters in France and Italy between 1947 and 1961 who become entangled in many different affairs of the heart.
Aspects opened at the Prince of Wales theatre in London on Monday, April 17, 1989 with the following cast:
Michael Ball as Alex Dillingham, a young Englishman
Ann Crumb as Rose Vibert, an actress
Kevin Colson as George Dillingham, Alex's uncle an English Painter
Kathleen Rowe McAllen as Giulietta Trapani, an Italian sculptress
Paul Bently as Marcel Richard, an actor manager
Diana Morrison as Jenny Dillingham, daughter of Rose and George
Laurel Ford as Elizabeth, George's housekeeper
David Greer as Hugo Le Meinier
Sally Smith as A Circus Chanteuse
Aspects soon followed it's London run, which closed on June 20, 1992 with a Broadway. Unfortunately, it was not well received by the New York critics and closed on February 2, 1991, less than a year after it's opening on April 8, 1990, but not before the role of rose was taken over by Webber's wife, Sarah Brightman.
Since it's close, Aspects has been one of the least performed of Webber's works. However, it's score has been praised by those who are not fans of his other musicals.
