Ανδροκλος

The son of Codeus and the leader of the Ionian colonists who drove out the Leleges and the Carians who had settled in the area round Ephesus. He himself was supposed to have founded the city. He also conquered the island of Samos. A story about the foundation of Ephesus was that an oracle had foretold that the site of the city would be revealed to the colonists by a wild boar and a fish. One evening, when they were preparing their meal, a fish that they were cooking jumped off the fire, taking with it a burning piece of charcoal which set fire to a thicket out of which ran a wild boar, which Androclus killed. Realizing that the oracle had been proved accurate by this odd coincidence Androclus founded the town on that spot.
