cyclops (thing)

In Greek mythology, immense one-eyed beings. They appear in at least two distinct traditions:

• According to Hesiod: The cyclopes Arges, Brontes and Steropes were smiths, the sons of Uranus and Gaea. and the first three of the Cyclopes race. They were imprisoned in Tartarus by Uranus and again by their brother, Kronos.
• According to Homer: The Cyclopean race was one of lawless barbarians - Odysseus encounters one such example in Polyphemus.
