Glögg is a traditional Scandinavian (note: Denmark and Norway seem to spell it Gløgg whereas Sweden goes with Glögg) winter drink, most closely related to a mulled wine (from what I can tell the name has taken the modern meaning of mulled wine in Swedish). It's a warm spiced drink which contains water, cloves, cinnamon, and sugar in its most basic form. Typically it is mixed with red wine, and often lemon or orange peels will be added. It's pretty good, and hits the spot nicely on a cold winter evening. Here's a basic recipe.

  • 1 bottle cheap red wine (don't waste money on good wine!)
  • 1/2 cup vodka
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 5 cloves
  • 1 and 1/8 cup sugar
  • shredded peel of orange or lemon, or whole lemon slices

Of course, there are infinitely many recipes. To make, allow cinnamon and cloves to soak in vodka for 24 hours. Mix in wine, sugar, and lemon/orange and heat (do not boil). There you have it! You can find many variations and more ideas on the web.
