Located in the Yakima Valley, in the Rattlesnake Hills, this small winery produces mainly dessert wines; specifically, it mainly produces an excellent range of ports and ice wines. Horizon's Edge is also notable for some very fancy labels and some fairly suggestive names.
Notable flavors include:
- Naked Raspberry - Raspberry port
- Wishful Thinking - Chocolate port
- Intimate Affair - Reserve port
- Smoking Gun - Coffee port
- Vanilla port
- Several varieties of ice wine
Visiting on a Friday or Saturday in the late spring or early summer in order to avoid both the hot summer and the tourists is recommended. For six dollars, you get samples of each of their wines. Bring a designated driver and a glass of your own. The former is due to the high alcohol content of the wines; the latter is just good policy, as very few of the local wineries will provide you with a free glass. I visited in late May with a couple of friends and ended up carrying away three bottles of port, all of which were quite good. The chocolate is to be highly recommended, especially if you can convince someone less drunk to bake you some brownies.
This is a rather cozy little winery; tasting is done on an elevated loft inside of a renovated barn that gazes out over the vineyard. It's definitely a family business, and usually features small children selling lemonade outside, a very friendly dog, and a husband and wife managing the tasting bar.
Maison de Padgett is the larger sister winery.
