this recipe, when finished, looks identical to date bars. they're great for potlucks, since no one takes date bars, there'll be something left for you.

Crust:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups oats (the quick-cooking ones)
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar (packed, duh.)
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/4 cups margarine or butter, softened.

Filling: Heat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9 x 13 pan, or line with parchment. Combine crust ingredients until crumbly. (use your hands, but wash them first). Press about half into the pan, bake for 10 minutes.

Sprinkle warm base with chocolate chips and nuts. Combine butterscotch and flour, pour over. Sprinkle with remaining crust.

Bake 18 to 22 minutes, until golden. Cool. Refrigerate for easier cutting. Cut into 36 bars.
