Muckraking novel published in 1906 by Upton Sinclair. A Socialist advocacy book, it exposes the evils of wage slavery primarily through graphic displays of the corruption of the meat-packers of Chicago.

Maldoror00 mentions his accuracy; the reason he could be so confident is because he spent some four months slumming undercover in Chicago and interviewing people before he wrote the book. Many of the horrific episodes are based on real life anecdotes and lore (the story about the Pure Leaf Lard, though possibly fabricated, was actually passed around Chicago's proletariat).
