A derogatory name for Microsoft, satirizing its poor legacy, functionality, and internals. In this case, it is the way long filenames are munged to suit the old DOS 8.3 filename style. (DOS filenames consist of a 8 character or less filename, optionally followed by a period and an up to three character extension. In Windows 95 and later, the filename is truncated and followed by a ~ and a number, and followed by the truncated extension.)
