A role-playing game designed by Niilo Paasivirta in early 1990s.

Once upon time, there was a parody of Lord of the Rings called Bored of the Rings. This great book was translated to Finnish as "Loru Sorbusten Herrasta"; I have read it once, it was funny, but reportedly the humor was a notch down lower-brow than the original.

LMERP is a parody of a role-playing game and is related to the book. Obviously, the name comes from MERP (the real Lord of the Rings RPG), and the game is set in "Lower Middle Earth", thus the name. The game rules obviously needs some other game to supplement it (AD&D was used in the example).

"Compatible with all versions of lappeen  Ranta role playing hame systems!"

Regrettably I can't translate all of these things because I have not read the book in English...

The game stats are somewhat reversed from the typical games. For example, the basic stats are Weakness, Clumsiness, Sickness, Stupidity and Ugliness instead of Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence and Comeliness. Also, the game master (called here the Surgeon Master) can decide to use different kinds of optional stats (Outtuition, Anxiousness, Disgustingness and so on...)

Also of note is the more realistic Alignment system: The possibilities are Goody-Goody, Neutral and Nasty and Evil.

The characters may have all sorts of extra disadvantages (such as kleptomania, alcoholism, warty face, scientology), and have all sorts of useful skills, such as surrendering, alchemy, brawling, begging, practical joking, blathering (the canonical example being "Yo' kin do mos' anythin' t' po' li'l me, so long as yo' please doan throw me in dat briar patch ober dere!")...

The weaponry includes gems like battle broom (any relation to the hoe of destruction?), sausages, pillow and two-handed pillow, the weapon combination sickle and hammer; The armor includes stuff like sneakers (comes with the smell), jackboots (comes with swastika-pattern socks), chain mail, leather suits (comes with free handcuffs and whip)...

The combat rules so far the most attitude-filled ones I've seen:

The players throw dice. When the dice hits the player sitting across the table, it's a hit. The Surgeon Master takes cover behind the Surgeon Master's cardboard screen, so that he's harder to hit. Whoever hits the Surgeon Master is "dead".

The combat rules are the only thing that's part of the real rule package. The optional rules are broad enough; Dice rolls needed for simple things. The critical screw-up table has a lot of stuff that could be extremely interesting in real RPG with comedic background, but a lot that I wouldn't include... ("You're frightened by the mosquito and start to cry.") Likewise for falling table ("You twist (music: Twist and Shout) for one round, but for some reason, don't fall.") and combat screw-up table ("You gasp like a fish for 1-4 turns, after which you can continue the surrendering"), critical hits, critical fire attacks, critical acid attacks (to teeth)...

The magic system is somewhat interesting as well, but regrettably not as mystical as some other magic systems. ("Slowness (assistance): Take a large bottle of syrup and pour it on the enemy.") The magic is still a dangerous and challenging thing; For example, they hypnosis spell requires that the caster must know how to count to ten - few characters know how to do that...

The game also has a lot of background details of the setting.

The game is available from http://www.funet.fi/pub/doc/games/roleplay/systems/lmerp/ - and possibly from Niilo's home page, I haven't tried (it used to be there).
