The Cradle

The snow fell in sheets, blanketing each and every street
Every leaf of grass hidden by the gentle colorless cradle
Waiting for a child to fall, limbs spread out in perfect symmetry
A Vitruvian snow angel, snow pushed aside, made alive
Until the snow starts to fall again, flakes face up to the sky
Every flake with a path to follow, from the sky to the ground

And though the wind might lift them up they all settle on the ground
Nothing can stop this, snow on the rooftops, it'll melt to the street
And those flowers you see dying, seven deadly seeds beneath the cradle
Nothing can stop this, this is the way things go, circling back in symmetry
Those things that you see dying, they were made to die, that's being alive
And the snow starts to fall again, face up to the clouds, face up to the sky

Effloresce in unbroken whiteness, face up to the clouds, face up to the sky
Ask yourself, "Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming?" Do not answer. Feel the ground
'til everything you know stumbles like a clumsy dancer, liquid, it'll melt to the street
Let yourself choke 'til you find your soul in the lost and found, beneath the cradle
Burrow into the rubbish, take what you see and set it side by side in perfect symmetry
Those things that you see tossed aside, were made to die, that's being alive

The snow angel melts away with the snow, she was never there at all, never alive
And everything falls apart again, and I slip and crack my head, ouch blood, I see sky
What a vulgar accident, hidden to all others, staining the melted angel red upon the ground
I hear the crack again and again inside my skull, echoes doubling and redoubling, the street
Wraps itself around my wound like a blanket, cool and comforting, soft like my mother's cradle
Waiting for my fall, limbs spread out to my sides like Jesus Christ, Son of God in perfect symmetry

And I'm made alive, reborn with each breath that leaves, with the blood that flows, it's symmetry
The blood runs down my arms and through my fingers, through my legs and out of my head, alive
Beneath the blanket of melting snow, the ground thaws, warm and damp, the soil staring at the sky
And the blood runs through the soil, and the grass grows greener and greener and greener in the ground
Like chemical fertilizer running through each and every leaf of grass, greener and greener, running into the street
And down the drain, down to the sewer and out to the creek and into the river, it all flows, doesn't stop after the cradle

Waiting for a child to fall, into His arms spread apart, beneath the sky and into the cradle
Every leaf of grass hidden by the gentle colorless cradle, limbs spread out in perfect symmetry
A Vitruvian snow angel, snow pushed aside, given breath and made alive
And the snow starts to fall again from the sky, each flake making passage, face up to the sky
Every flake with a path to follow, weaving through the winter loom, cold air from the sky to ground
The snow fell in sheets, blanketing each and every street

Nothing ever came from nothing, look upon the street from the sky
And from the cradle, crying out for some unreachable time, symmetry
Stretch tomorrow to eternity and bury those thoughts in the blood-soaked ground
