President Lincoln described General Rosencrans after the battle as "...confused and stunned, like a duck hit on the head...". General Grant replaced Rosencrans as Commander of the Department of the Cumberland with General George Thomas as a result of this battle.

My pet (humorous) theory of the battle is that the commanding officers stood around in their strategy session and said "We are fighting where?" and never did get their act together.
