Created by Johnston McCulley in 1919 as the hero of a serialized novel originally titled The Curse of Capistrano and later re-titled The Mark of Zorro. (The book has been recently re-released in paperback and is pretty much a must-have for adventure lovers.) The foppish caballero Don Diego Vega is in reality ZORRO, the notorious highwayman who protects the missions and peons from the forces of the corrupt governor of California and his cronies in the army.

Many Zorro movies have been made, the best two probably being Mark of Zorro starring Tyrone Power and Mask of Zorro with Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins as an aging Don Diego Vega.
