The Dodonna/Blissex RZ-1 A-Wing is the fastest Starfighter in the Rebel Alliance, and one of the fastest Starfighters in the galaxy. It does not have firepower of the T-65 X-Wing or the B-51 B-Wing, but its high speed and good maneuverability makes up for that, thus making the RZ-1 an excellent Starfighter for hit and run tactics, dogfighting and reconnaissance. The RZ-1 A-Wing was originally used for escort duty

The RZ-1 A-Wing has a hydro-servo bearing installed on each side of the craft that can pivot the two Borstel RG9 Laser Cannons 60 degrees up or down and even fire backwards if modified. The RZ-1 A-Wing also employs a short-range sensor jammer that can absorb and block long-range sensor pulses with its Dedicated Energy Receptor Projector, and hide its positions as it closes in on its target. While in combat, the jammer's Full-Spectrum Distortion Projector will use broadband emissions to block all scanners and targeting computers. It also has a row of Static Discharge Panels that can scramble comm and subspace frequencies, cutting off all communications for ships in that area. The jammer will however only work on smaller ships, and if used against large ships like Imperial Star Destroyers it will only just give up the RZ-1's position.

There are several basic types of the RZ-1 A-Wing. The RZ-1 Mk I was the first RZ-1 and came into service after the Battle of Hoth but before the Battle of Endor. The RZ-1 Mk II came into service about a year after the Battle of Endor, featuring more powerful engines, improved targeting computer and maneuverability modifications to match the TIE interceptor. The RZ-1 Mk III was a later version, with improved an Targeting Computer, Sensor Systems and flight control avionics. The A-Wing Mk IV has Proton Torpedo Launchers instead of the Concussion Missile Launchers, making it more suitable for attacking larger ships. All of the RZ-1 types are still in service. Several Mk I and Mk IIs were converted into the Mk III.

The RZ-1 A-Wing was designed by General Jan Dodonna and engineer Walex Blissex. The first RZ-1 A-Wing was produced by the Rebel Alliance after the Battle of Hoth. Due to the Rebel Alliance's lack of funds, most RZ-1 A-Wings were custom-built in private shops. The Executor Class Command Ship during the Battle of Endor was destroyed by an RZ-1 A-Wing which crashed in the Executor's command bridge while their shields were failing.
