Mislocated in the light industrial district on the west side of Berkeley California is Juan's Place, a restaurant that has become a favorite of mine. It is (as you may have guessed) a Mexican restaurant, where they serve decently sized portions with Spanish rice and refried beans on the side, in oval plates too hot to touch, covered with melted cheese. This is food that is becoming harder to find in California, where often the rice is brown, the beans are black, the plates are cold, cheese is soy-based, and there is jicama in the salsa.

My personal favorites are the chicken enchiladas with mole sauce and the chile rellenos. They promote their wine margaritas, but I find that I do not appreciate that drink.

From the intersection of Dwight Avenue and San Pablo Avenue, go southwest, one block each, to the corner of Carlton and Ninth Street.
