Mechanized foot soldiers of the Neimoidian Trade Federation army. These mechanical terrors were used by many governments prior to the Clone Wars as a cheap, effective military force. The Battle Droids of the Trade Federation were a shining example of a cost effective droid army. The concept surrounding these droid armies was to overwhelm the enemy with massive numbers. Hence the droids of the Trade Federation were made in the most economical fashion possible. The droids were flimsy and lacked an oboard command processor, they were controlled remotely by the imposing Neimoidian battleships in orbit around the planet. The primary weakness of this system being that if the control ship is lost, all droids under that ships command were rendered inoperative. This is clearly evident during the climax of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. It is hinted that the failure of the Battle Droid Army at Naboo was one of the examples used by Emperor Palpatine in his creation of Stormtroopers.
