Hypatia (person)

Great female mathematics teacher of Alexandria, murdered by a Christian mob in 415 CE. Her quivering flesh was scraped from her bones with oyster shells, according to Gibbon. The history of mathematics in the Roman empire goes something like this:

• 212 BCE, Archimedes murdered.
• 415 CE, Hypatia murdered.
• 524 CE, Boethius murdered.
• till 565, the admirable Justinian abolishes schools of philosophy, theatres, and vestiges of Roman democracy. Beginning of Dark Ages.
