American bluesman (1910-1976). Real name:
Chester Arthur Burnett. THE
powerhouse blues performer. Though many other
musicians have been more
skilled, the
Wolf's distinctive
growl was capable of driving an audience
wild with
excitement (and sometimes
terror). He recorded many songs written by
Willie Dixon, backed up by blazing
guitarists
Willie Johnson and
Hubert Sumlin. The Wolf made his
television debut on ABC's rock music show "
Shindig" in 1965--the
Rolling Stones were scheduled to appear on the show and insisted that Howlin' Wolf
perform as their
special guest. Some of the Wolf's hits included "
Smokestack Lightnin'", "
The Red Rooster", "
Back Door Man", "
Killing Floor", and "
Wang Dang Doodle". Many of his songs were covered by the
Rolling Stones,
the Doors,
Cream,
Jeff Beck, the
Blues Project, and the
Electric Flag.
