ESRI navel inspection aside....
The graphic representations of a collection of
entities (i.e. real-world objects), all of which
are to be viewed at the same time (or not). The term is
sometimes used to indicate the entities themselves.
Sadly, every
GIS vendor adds
baggage to this term.
