According to The Complete Metalsmith by Tim McCreight, in Sicily, where much Agate comes from, each color of Agate is a charm against different things. Here they are, paraphrased.

• Red: Protection from spiders and scorpions.
• Green: Cures eye problems.
• Striped Green: Drinking water that has touched this prevents sterility in women.
• Grey: Prevents a stiff neck when worn.

Agate has a Moh's hardness of 7.
