Alex Ross has a long-standing feud with comic-book and film writer Kevin Smith (writer/director/actorof Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back fame), over an imagined snub in Kevin's second film, Mallrats.

In this film, Kevin seemed to imply that Stan Lee created all of the Marvel Comics franchises of the '60s, including The Hulk, the X-Men, and The Fantastic Four, when in reality, all of them were created with the aid of the late "King" Jack Kirby. Ross resented the seeming dismissal of his fellow artist's contribution to the creation of these classic silver-age characters, and was extremely vocal about it. Kevin Smith responded equally poorly to this criticism, and thus a rivalry was born.
