In 1968, the Matsunaga sisters started the "All Japan Women's Pro Wrestling" (AJW). It was very popular through the 1970s and 1980s with a lot of famous teams like Beauty Pair and Crush Girls. Until the 1990s the age limit for the female wrestlers was 26 years. This limit was abandoned in to focus on an older audience. In 1993, AJW had huge successes due to a new feature: The Dream Slams.

However, in 1996, the audience started disappearing leading to lack of funds for the continuation of the AWF. Its ceasure was delayed as two new characters - Las Cachorrus Orientales (Etsuko Mita et Mima Shimoda) - appeared in 1997, but AJW finally 'died' in the year 2000.
