Indistrial Automation created the R1 unit, which was able of storing the coordinates of one hyperspace jump. These droids were used as technicians on captial ships and other large freighters. The next model was the R2 unit, which was extremely popular. This droid was much smaller and had a wide range of tools. R2 units could fit in military starfighters, such as the X-wing. While in flight, the R2 could monitor things such as performance and speed, isolate and repair technical problems and reroute power throughout the ship's systems. With an advanced processor, the R2 can perform over ten thousand operations per second to forcast potential problems. R2 units could also set hyperspace coordinates and perform flight maneuvers such as engine start up and preflight taxiing.

R2 units had two manipulator arms, an electric arc welder, a circular saw, internal caro compartment, a fire extinguisher, and a holographic projector. The later R3 units could also serve as gunnery crew, sercurity troopers, and naval chiefs of operation aboard captial ships. While the R2 and R3 were more catered for military purposes, the R4 was a more inexpensive but durable solution for outer-rim inhabitants. These droids sold well for Industrial Automation, but the R5 unit was considered a failure. While more affordable, R5 droids lack the R2's versatility and the R4's reliability. It was subject to many malfunctions, such as blown motivators and chronic overheating. R5 droids also had a tendency to develop annoying personality quirks.

If you ever come by an R2 unit at a rather suspicious place, keep in mind that the Empire has literally thousands of these droids working undercover as spies. However, you might actually want to buy one at a black market as they are much cheaper there than actually ordering one.
