Svenska Kullagerfabriken, "Swedish Ball-bearing factory", a world leader in ball bearings, has branched out (rather naturally) into high-strength steel and other related industries. It was also behind the foundation of Volvo in the 1920's.

Like many major Swedish industrial companies, it internationalized early (see "Sweden's second-largest industrial city"), and it is said that many inhabitants of Schweinfurt in Germany think SKF means "Schweinfurter Kugellagerfabrik".
