Country singer, born Virginia Wynette Pugh on May 5, 1942 in
Mississippi.
She is known as "The First Lady of Country Music". She had twenty #1 hits on Billboard's country chart, including her signature song, "Stand By Your Man" (1969), which was also a top 20 pop hit. Her only other pop hit was a collaboration with The KLF, "Justified and Ancient" (#11, 1992).
She was married to George Jones from 1969 to 1975, recording many duets with him during this time.
She died on April 6, 1998.
