John R Lively is a retired musican, college professor and organist. He grew up in Wyanesburg, PA the fifth of eight children. He attended Wyanesburg College and majored in organ. John then married Janet Scott, before entering the Navy and World War II. He was discharged in 1944 after he was wounded.

When he returned he went to graduate school at Juilliard in New York and then went on to get his PhD in Sacred Music from Union (now located at Columbia) Theological Seminary.

John and Janet settled several years later in Pittsburgh and they had two children Linda and John. He worked as the head of the Music Department at Carlow College, played the organ at Third Presbytarian Church and also played the piano on Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.

By the way, he's my grandfather.
