The
World Chess Champion is the best player in the
world, right? This was all very well and good until the
1990s. Up to that point, from the inauguration of the title, only one organisation was responsible for alotting
championship points and generally deciding who the next contender should be. This organisation was
FIDE.
During the 1990's several top players, including the then (and still) champion Gary Kasparov broke away and created a rival organisation the PCA. Confusion ensues. What is certain is that Kasparov is the current world champion and strongest player in the world. He is currently playing Vladimir Kramnik in London in a 16 round match under world championship rules. It will be hard not to consider the winner the world champion. Allthough others feel that they are the number one contender for the title Kramnik is one of the strongest players in the world and has previously beaten Kasparov more than any other player.
