A voltage reference is a known stable source of a certain DC voltage. Voltage references may be based on a zener diode of known breakdown voltage, or a Weston cell, a chemical battery of a precise, constant voltage. Diode voltage references are used to stabilize power supplies. The Weston cell is used in calibrating voltmeters.
