Literally, a hollow vein. There are two vena cavae, the superior vena cava and the inferior vena cava. These are the largest veins in the body. Both vena cavae empty into the right atrium of the heart. The SVC brings deoxygenated blood back from the arms and head while the IVC returns blood from the parts of the body inferior to the diaphragm.
