A tropical depression is a tropical cyclone storm with maximum sustained surface winds of less than 17 meters per second (39 miles per hour). Tropical depressions are not given names like tropical storms and hurricanes, but meteorologists tend to keep an eye on them so that if the tropical depression develops into a tropical storm, people can be warned.
