In
baseball, a tripleheader is when the same two teams play three games against each other on the same day. Like the
doubleheader, it is exhausting for the players, only even more so, and thus there have only been three triple headers in
Major League history.
On September 1, 1890, Brooklyn hosted the Pittsburgh Pirates and swept all three games, on September 7, 1896, the Baltimore Orioles won all three games from the Louisville Colonels in Baltimore, and on October 2, 1920, the Cincinnati Reds took two out of three games from the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.
No tripleheaders have been played at the Major League level since then, and are actually illegal under the current collective bargaining agreement between the players and the owners.
