A person or firm that books passage on planes, trains, ships and other common carriers, usually for the general public in exchange for a commission from the carrier. With the direct availability to the public of on-line databases over the Internet and the ability to book flights themselves with airlines directly, the travel agency is becoming threatened with extinction. The reduction or elimination of commissions by some airlines has resulted in some travel agents resorting to charging the customer for their services.
