A top level domain, in practice, is what appears after the final dot in an internet address. For instance for the address goliath.evansville.edu, .edu is the top level domain name. Each top level domain is assigned a registrar whose job it is to dole out second level domains. Common top level domain names in the United States are .com, .net, .org, .edu, .gov, and .us. Foreign top level domains often indicate the country of origin. For instance .uk for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, .jp for Japan, .fr for France, and .tv for Tuvalu.
