Used to be done to almost all children in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s whenever they got strep throat; as more was learned about the lymph nodes and their role in controlling disease, the procedure was done only to people who had chronic tonsilitis, like myself. I had tonsilitis 11 times in 12 months before they yanked the things.

A new form of this surgical procedure has been developed. It consists of lasering the tonsils out.

In order to qualify for this procedure, ones tonsils must not be too "fibrous" and one must have good control over ones gag reflex.

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, and is relatively fast and simple, generally lasting between half an hour and forty five minutes. The immense pain usually encountered by adult tonsillectomy patients is of a significantly lower level. The healing process is also a lot quicker than standard general anaesthetic tonsillectomies

The worst part of this procedure is smelling your own burning flesh.
