To wit is an English expression dating from the 14th century. It means, literally, "to know" (one of wit's archaic meanings is "know", stemming from the old English word witan). The expression is used to mean "that is to say", to wit (ha-ha), "namely." The expression is often employed as a transition between a vague sentence and one that is more thorough or specific.
