Below normal platelet count (less than 100,000 per microliter) because of reduced production or increased destruction. Can be caused by bone marrow injury or failure due to leukemia for example, autoimmune diseases like SLE, prosthetic heart valves, or HIV infection.
Characterized by spontaneous bleeding, and a longer than normal bleeding time.
