In comic art, "thought balloon" is standard jargon for a space in a panel, usually indicated by either an oval or a cloud shape, containing text which is understood to represent the character's unspoken thoughts. The balloon also frequently has a trail of small circles which point at the character who is thinking the contained text.

Compare and contrast with the "word balloon."
