The main muscle used in respiration and breathing. The thoraco-abdominal diaphragm seperates the cavity of the chest and the abdomen. When you inhale, the diaphragm contracts...consequently expanding the chest cavity and drawing air into your lungs while at the same time stimulating the stomach and liver to help digestion along.

Hiccups are the result of muscle spasms in this diaphragm.
