Tengu are shapechanging goblins in Japanese folklore. In their natural form they have long noses or beaks, long stringy hair, and birdlike wings. The speak without using their mouths, using telepathy. Their main adversary is the clever monk who is always outsmarting them. A favorite ploy of the Tengu is to try to catch a monk in a compromising position by posing as a beautiful maiden. Tengu are generally honorable and keep their word if they give it, which is why they are so careful never to give their word. Tengu have a mean streak a mile wide, and are not to be trifled with.
