AKA conventional encryption, is a method of encryption where the encryption key can be calculated from the decryption key, and vice versa. In most implementations the encryption and decryption keys are the same. Symmetric encryption while not as directly useful as public-key encryption is usually 1000 times faster, therefore hybrids of the two such as PGP have sprung up.
