A surikogi is a Japanese pestle, used in combination with a suribachi. It's made of wood to prevent it from wearing down the ridges in the mortar.

Traditionally, a surikogi is made from the wood of the Japanese pepper tree (sansho), with the bark left on. This wood is supposed to give a slightly peppery taste to the food it grinds. Modern surikogis are mass produced and without bark, and decidedly less beautiful.
