Stride employes tenths rather than octaves. Tenths are often rolled (forward and backward) with backward-tenths being fundamental to the genre. Back-beats are used to break up the octave-chord rhythm. Stride also swings!

James P. Johnson (the father of stride), Fats Waller and Wille (The Lion) Smith are the "big three" stride players.

Judy Carmichael is probably the best-known living performer.
