A form of horse racing in which horse and rider must jump fences as part of the race. The name derives from informal races across the countryside, where one person would challenge another to race to a given landmark, often a steeple.

The Carolina Cup, an annual steeplechase held in Camden, SC has the largest purse of any steeplechase in the US (or did as of the 1980s).
