A fairly rare reddish-brown to yellow-orange type of garnet, mostly mined in Southeast Asia, Brazil, Namibia and Madagascar, though Virginia has produced some in the U.S.. Particularly fine-quality bright orange spessartines are called "Mandarin garnets," possibly after the color of the mandarin orange.
