Introduction
In use in nightclubs all over, the shag
tag is a device used for helping people overcome nerves when approaching prospective partners. Many clubs have a specific
shag tag night - once per month, for example - rather than employing them all the time.
The name is from shag, British slang meaning sexual intercourse, and tag as in a badge or
label.
How it works
On entry to the club on the relevant night, each punter picks up a unique number. They pin this to
their clothing in a visible location. Everybody has their
unique number, and there are notice boards
on which messages can be left.
If someone catches your eye, you can write a note to their number, and leave it on a board, signing it with your number. On checking the noticeboard, you find
any messages for you, and seek out the sender by their number. If you also like them, then an approach can be made - safe in the knowledge they already like you.
If you are not keen on your admirer, then you simply
ignore the message, and nobody loses face with a personal
confrontation.
Pros and cons
A good system, if it is honoured by all present, the
shag tag can be helpful for shy people looking for
a partner, or just a fling. Unfortunately it is open to
abuse, because everybody's numbers are on show, and it would
be easy to forge messages.
The pros must outweigh the cons, since shag tag
nights are on the increase - spreading out of the gay scene
where they were most common previously, and expanding all
over in the straight scene.
